Outreach
See calendar for dates and be sure to get our emails
WiSE Outreach provides opportunities for WiSE members to engage with the public, such as visiting local K-12 schools or conducting lab tours on UCSC campus. Our primary goals are to encourage students to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and to teach them about career options in STEM fields.
We welcome volunteers from all STEM fields and levels of experience (undergraduates, graduate students, post-graduates, post-docs, technicians, professionals, professors, etc.). Check our calendar for outreach events, and join the mailing list for calls for volunteers and information about upcoming events.
Hands-on classrooms
Science fairs
Community events
Our volunteers bring hands-on learning to classrooms in the Monterey Bay area. Join us as we have fun with liquid nitrogen, model rock cycles, and extract strawberry DNA. We provide training for new volunteers - we just need your enthusiasm for science. Teachers, let us know if you have specific subjects or themes you would like volunteers for!
We love to judge science fairs at the local schools. It is a great opportunity for students to interact with real scientists and is a rewarding experience. We have also helped judge the Santa Cruz County Science fair and are always in need of extra hands.
Join us for days of science activities with students and community members. Community members can regularly find us at the Westside Farmer's market on Saturdays with our "Ask a Scientist" booth.
Partner
programs
We love to partner with other Santa Cruz science education programs like TechTrek - a weeklong summer camp hosted by the AAUW. We also host/support events with the Genomics Institute and the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History.
